Chapter 1: The Card Crafters

From June 2nd  to June 27th 2025

In this design sprint, beginning June 2nd 2025, we are aiming to craft a first complete deck of 30 fsys Quest Cards – each a concrete, real-world action that transforms how we understand and live within food systems.

To track the experiences and skills gained while “playing out the cards = doing the Quests”, a first Print version of the Action Character Journal ACJ! has to be crafted as well.

End of June 2025: Simultaneous Pilot Testing in a German and Nigerian School class, collecting valuable feedback for the next card system iteration.

As a Card Crafter you take on one, two or all of the Roles:

Conceptualizer

You concept the quest and get the contents together. The quest, values and additional content for the card webpage.

When done, you give your loose material to the visual designers.

Background Illustrator

You draw, illustrate, photo-manipulate or AI prompt a graphic for the background of the card that highlights the theme of the quest,.

Card Designer

You are putting the concept content and background illustrations together in the free, open-source Graphic Design Software Krita – with the help of the fsys quest card template.

Conceptualize fsys Quest Cards

Quests are real-world actions that players choose to take as part of the fsys game. Each Quest is designed as a concrete, doable mission that supports the transformation of our food systems.

Quests are started by playing out and completing a Quest Card, then reflecting and documenting the experience in the Adventure Character Journal (ACJ!).

Each Quest is connected to:

  • a food system quadrant  (e.g. processing, eating, waste)
    Q-Points on a range from 1 to 10
where 1 is easy and short and 10, complex and long

  • a transformational value (Knowledge, Consciousness, Action) – (the T-Points / 3 Tenets)

  • one or more SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) being served

Quests are the core mechanic of fsys — simple actions that add up to powerful change.

Let’s begin with the conception of your first Quest card:

1. In which Quadrant(s) of the simplified food systems map does your Quest play?

Quadrant Description

Q2 Processing Where our food is being processed
Q3 Cook & Eat Where our food is being cooked and eaten
Q4 Waste Where all the waste goes..

2. How difficult, complex and time consuming is this Quest in the Quadrant(s) on a scale from 1-10, where 10 is very complex and long ?

3. What is your Quest about, what has to be solved, achieved, done?

Each Quest is designed as a concrete, doable mission, expressed in a super short text (to fit into the card textfield)

4. What would be an epic, cool, funny title for the Quest?

5. Which Tenets does the Quest activate?
